Street Outreach: As one member of a team of 20 volunteers (plus Jazmin our
Labrador puppy), we park our bus in a set location for two or more hours. This
creates a gathering space for homeless people. What
happens then is like a big family gathering - people milling around everywhere
talking, laughing and catching up with each other. It is a positive space where
people feel welcome and develop friendships. Your
role will not be to 'help people' but to get to know them as friends and
journey with them through life's ups and downs. [Read: Rebeccas Story] Training:

is a mix of challenging and rewarding - it sounds kinda scary at first being around
so many homeless people but they are so friendly and easy going. I thought I wouldn't
know what to say to them - trust me stand still and look interested... people
will talk till the cows come home. The experience has taught me one million things
that make me better at my day job, I can talk to anyone now no matter who they
are it doesn't bother me, and I was really shy to start with." |
